Fall 2014 Trends: Oversized Chunky Knits

Fall 2014 Trends: Oversized Chunky Knits
(Images via Style.com)

I suppose it makes me a bad blogger to admit that I don’t really pay attention to fashion week when it’s happening. At the start of fall it’s hard for me to think about spring fashion, and it’s doubly hard to think about fall fashions at the start of spring. This past weekend, however, with fall finally on my mind, I browsed some of the fall fashion week photos posted on Style.com to get a sense for some of the fashion trends we’re likely to see over the next few months.

While we’ll talk about colors soon, one of the first things that stood out to me was the number of designers that included oversized chunky knits in their presentations. Many of the styles above remind me of the clothes I used to wear in high school and college in the late 90s and early 00s, which is a bit of a departure from the slim fitting fine knits that have been so prevalent the past few years. I cannot say that I’m upset. Oversized knits = maximum comfort. If we can all be super comfortable AND on trend? That’s as close to a win-win scenario as you can get!

Fall styles are just starting to hit the shelves, but I went in search of a few oversized chunky knit sweaters to see what is available in “real life” (as opposed to just walking the runway). Here are some of the options I found for less than $100:

Trends to Try: Flamingo Fix (Under $50)

The funny thing about blogging – or at least blogging about shopping – is that most of the emails I receive are dealing with things that aren’t happening for another couple of months. For instance, this morning I received an email about the hottest shoes for fall and I promptly hit the delete button. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the news, but after the world’s longest winter I plan on enjoying summer… at least for a couple of weeks. 😉

We’ve covered a few of the season’s biggest footwear trends already, including metallic sandals, ugly sandals, and slip on sneakers, and now I’m starting to see flamingos popping up everywhere! Every single time I see a flamingo-print item it brings a smile to my face. Is there a better print for summer?

It’s not hard to find flamingo items at the moment, but here are some of my flamingo favorites under $50 if you’re planning on adding a little bit of pink bird fun to your wardrobe this summer:

Revisiting the Romper: 22 Cute Styles for Summer

I try to write about most fashion trends and where to shop for those trends (usually for less), but I’ve got to tell you that the romper is one trend I was unable to get behind the past couple of years, for many reasons. The main reason is that most rompers that were on the market were oddly cut and resulted in a design that was high waisted and placed an odd emphasis on one’s crotch area. Add to that the difficulty of using a public restroom while in a romper and these things just weren’t for me.

That said, rompers don’t seem to be going out of style but the ones that I’m seeing this year are, dare I say, CUTE? (You’re probably rolling your eyes if you already thought rompers were cute. I don’t blame you.)

Many of the romper styles I’m seeing have retooled the proportions a bit so quite a few rompers look more like dresses (or culottes with an attached top). If they don’t look like dresses, then the length of the short piece has been lengthened a bit, which is taking some of the emphasis off the crotch area. Some rompers are even fancy enough that they can be worn to formal gatherings! (Though I’m still not sure how I feel about the wedding romper that J.Crew is selling.)

Should I decide to purchase a romper this summer, these are the styles that would be tops on my list:

Trends to Try: Ugly Sandals

On Good Morning America this morning they discussed “ugly sandals.” And a few weeks ago The Fabulist mentioned them as well. I was intrigued. Basically, the trend of sky high heels is turning to the trend of comfort, in the form of these “ugly” sandals.

Well, don’t let the name deceive you! I found a few pairs that aren’t that ugly after all!

jeffrey campbell wedges

These Jeffrey Campbell Wedges are actually quite cute I think!

And what about these  Teva – Tirra’s?!

Teva - Tirra (Simply Taupe) - Footwear

I think they’d look cute paired with jeans and t-shirt!

I adore this flatform trend!

Yes Pound Flatform Sandals

These Yes Pound Flatform Sandals fascinate me! I just don’t know if I could walk in them. :)

Jeffrey Campbell seems to have hit the ugly sandals trend on the head.

. I love it.

Ugly sandals, love them or hate them, I think they are here to stay! Due to the comfort factor, your feet will thank you!

Do tell: Are you a fan of the ugly sandals trend?

Trends to Try: Culottes

My trusty computer went to the shop yesterday for an annual cleaning (thanks Apple Care!), which meant that I spent last night doing old fashioned things like browsing magazines, reading (on my Kindle, natch), and looking at photos on Instagam. I then grew tired of these pursuits at 9:30 and went to bed for the night and let me tell you – 9 hours of sleep on a weeknight is amazing! Normally I only get 5-6 hours of sleep per night, so today I feel like a whole new person!

Anyhoo, one of the things that stood out to me when I was browsing People Style Watch is that they declared “long” shorts to be in style again.

“Culottes?” I thought to myself. “Culottes are in again? Awesome. I’ve only been waiting for this day since I was 12.”

I’m pretty sure my entire summer wardrobe as a child consisted of culottes, so I’m pretty excited about this development. I didn’t want to talk People’s word for it, but a quick scan of websites shows that culottes are everywhere!

If you’re sitting there wondering, “what are culottes?” (likely because your tween wardrobe wasn’t as adorkable as mine), culottes are long loose-fitting shorts (or short pants) that resemble a skirt. Unlike the very similar skort, culottes do not usually have a wrap-around flap in front. Culottes can be super flattering, super comfy, and office appropriate as it’s likely that only your most stylish friends will realize you’re wearing long shorts to the office! Why culottes ever went out of style is beyond me.

Labour of Love Culottes

How chic are these Labor of Love Culottes? They look JUST like a skirt, which makes them office appropriate but you’ll be way more comfortable because they’re actually shorts. (Not to be unpleasant but at the very least, one doesn’t need to worry about summer thigh chafing and combative undergarments while wearing culottes!) These leopard print culottes are on sale for $133.92 at FarFetch.com.

Free People Culottes

These Free People Culottes are perhaps a little too short and casual-looking to be considered office appropriate, but they sure are super cute! They look perfect for summer! These culottes are $78 at Bloomingdale’s.

Floral Woven Culottes

If culottes are something you want to try but you don’t want to invest a bunch of money, Forever21 has a few pairs that are – somewhat surprisingly – office appropriate, like these Floral Woven Culottes that cost just $22.80.

For more affordable culottes, I highly recommend checking out ASOS. Not many of their many styles of culottes are office appropriate, but they are cute and affordable, and they have traditional sizes, maternity, and plus size culottes available!

Here are some of my favorites:

Do Tell: Will you be rocking culottes this summer or is this a trend you’re going to pass on?
