So do you all remember these lovelies that I posted about two weeks ago in my Etsy Monday feature about cupcakes?

Red Velvet Cake Balls

Tiffany's Red Velvet Cake Balls

Yep, I posted about cake balls with all of the cupcakes and am I ever glad I did! Immediately after I posted about these treats I contacted their maker, Audrey of Etsy shop Audrey Kate Rae, to ask if she’d be willing to be featured in Etsy Monday.  Luckily for all of us, Audrey was not only nice enough to answer a few questions, but she offered up a cake ball giveaway, too!  Woo hoo!

I must confess though – not only did I contact Audrey to see if she’d be willing to be featured here, but I also placed an immediate order for the Red Velvet Cake Balls above.  You see, I absolutely cannot resist anything that is red velvet and I just had to try these for myself.

Friends – they are amazing.  A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. These red velvet cake balls were easily the best cake balls I’ve ever eaten.  Now, I’m no cake ball connoisseur or anything {giggle}, but I can tell you when red velvet cake tastes good, and this red velvet tasted wonderful.  So wonderful, in fact, that I’m currently really upset that I ate my dozen in three an embarrassingly small number of days.  Oops.

If you haven’t had a cake ball before, the frosting and the cake are mushed together in the actual “cake” part of the ball.  When you bite into the red velvet balls you get the wonderful chocolate red velvet flavor combined with a not-too-rich cream cheese frosting.  It makes for a wonderfully moist bite of cake.  It is all dipped in chocolate, which holds everything together.  The outcome?  Too die for.  Seriously.

I recognize that not everyone may be a freak about red velvet like me, so no worries, Audrey makes cake balls in other flavors, too.

For instance, Dark Chocolate Orange Espresso, sprinkled with sea salt:

Or Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Cake:

I dare you to tell me that you’re not yearning for a cake ball or two or three right about now.

I’m going to let Audrey talk for a minute while I try to figure out how to make these myself and then we’ll talk about the giveaway, k? 🙂

1. For how long have you been baking?

I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember. My mom, Betty Crocker, and I used to bake when I was little and it just stuck. (My mom loves Betty Crocker…) For the past year or so, I’ve decided to start making cake balls.

I tried all different combinations, brought them into work with me or sent them to work with my husband. A few coworkers kept encouraging me to take my cake balls to the next level and try selling them, so I did!

2. How did you decide to specialize in making cake balls?

Cake balls and cake pops are so fun because they’re the perfect little snack, they’re not messy, they look really fancy and you can come up with endless flavor and color combinations. People love them because they’re something different.

3. Is there any secret to making a good cake ball?

The secret is to get the ratio of frosting to cake just right. Too much frosting and you won’t be able to dip them without them sticking everywhere. Too little frosting and you’ll have crumbs in your chocolate when you try to dip them. Oh, and the last tip is to try not to eat all the cake so you actually have enough left to make the balls!

4. All of the cake ball flavors you make sound incredible – is there any one you would consider a favorite?

That’s a tough one – I think it’s a tie between the devil’s food and the carrot cake. Carrot cake is my best seller too, so it sounds like everyone agrees. My favorite design is the Tiffany’s Red Velvet – this one has been featured on a lot of blogs lately.

5. Do you have plans to add new flavors and/or baked goods to your line-up?

Absolutely! Im always cooking up new flavors and combinations. In fact, just last week I added a new flavor – German Chocolate. Suggestions are always welcome too!

6. Do you ever make bulk orders for events and parties?

Yes, I have made bulk orders and love to do them! People really like them things like for baby showers, girl’s-night-ins, birthday parties, and anniversaries because they’re different than your normal party snacks (Jordan almonds, mints and peanuts) and they WOW the guests!

Audrey Kate Rae’s cake balls are awesome. I love that I can eat one, and feel as satisfied as when I eat a whole piece of cake. I am thinking about ordering the cake ball pops for my twin boys’ birthday party, as party favors. I think they’d like the bugs-Eeww, or maybe a sports theme…?
